Greeks Protest Harsh Pension & Labor Measures – Riots/Video
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Economy, News, Society
Dozens of masked youths have been clashing with police at a union protest in Athens during a general strike against the cash-strapped government’s planned pension and labor reforms.
Riot police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse troublemakers who threw chunks of marble smashed off a metro station entrance , hurling stones and petrol bombs, setting rubbish bins on fire and chanting “Burn parliament” slogans.
Thousands Greeks took to streets today to protest sweeping pension cuts, later retirement and labor market law changes.
According to Greek Government these ‘reforms’ are imposed by the Greece- EU/IMF memorandum but many media put this in question, accusing the PASOK Government for being “socialist with neo-liberal pockets!” It is the fifth major general strike this year in Greece.
While the general strike extended to transportation such as bus, ship and ferry services some tourists were left stranded. A fact stressed by many foreign media, but fairly ignored by the Greeks, who see their pension cuts down to 30%, their retirement coming 5 -15 years later, their work rights overthrown, their every day getting more difficult and their future diving in uncertainty.
Public and private sector unions announced plans for a new general strike in early July.
