The alleged driver of the car that killed ethnic Greek Aristotelis Goumas has handed himself to Albanian police.
Albanian News Agency ATA quoting police sources reports that Ilir Mukaj delivered himself to police of Vlore (Aylonas) on Sunday night in order to face charges. Ilir Mukaj was wanted by an international warrant and a bounty of $20,000. Six other Albanians have been arrested by police for this issue.
Aristotelis Goumas, 37, was killed Thursday night on a land road of Himara, Southern Albania after a dispute with a group of young Albanians, who had asked him not to speak Greek. Read the story here
North Epirus News Agency, nenanews.eu, reports that Goumas was run over twice by the car driven by the Albanians.
The killing of Goumas sparked tensions in the area of Himara, mainly inhabitant by ethnic Greeks. Political parties both in Albania and Greece condemned the assassination. Albanian PM Sali Berisha spoke of ‘murder’.
