How to Check if Weather Temperatures are Extremely High
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Photos, weather
This seems to be my favorite topic during this summer. The never ending heat wave! It is my favorite for two reasons: 1) I hate continuous heat! 2) I love to write about it! I consider it as one of the ‘light” issues to write about. I don’t have to do much of research. I do not need to think about complex context or political balances, double check economical figures, type difficult names or create links. Writing about this heat wave situation is an oasis amid difficult issues like the Greek-Israeli rapprochement, ethnic tensions in Albania, upcoming bread prices increases, or West Nile Virus deaths.
So, how do I check if weather temperatures are extremely high?
First: Check the cat
Take a look at my cat! If she lays on her back longer than 15 minutes… like that
My cat in a room/ fan /40 degrees C outside
… then I know the situation is critical! Unfortunately you can not save a cat in summer as you can do with a dog.
I have tried to wrap a wet, wringed piece of cloth around my cat’s neck (I used to do this to my dog) but she feels it annoys her, she gets scared, stands up and walks away. And the wet cloth is starting to mop the floor.
Second: Check own therometer
No matter what radio stations, televisionbroadcasters and newspapers say, my best advisor is my own, good old thermometer. It is in the shadow of my balcony – under the sun blinds.
38 degrees at 5.30 pm, August 19, 2010.
Third: Ice Cold Coffee
The last heat check method, best proven all these years, is how many ice cubes I add in my ‘afternoon must’, the Greek Frappe – Ice Coffee, and how quick I drink it.
35 degrees : Two ice cubes, drank in 15 minutes
Need a quick, creamy Greek “Frappe” – Ice Coffee Recipe?
I put 1,5 teaspoon instant coffee granules, 2 teaspoon sugar and 2-3 soup spoons of cold water in the food processor. I close it and press the button for 1 minute.
I put 2-3-4 ice cubes in a long glass. I open the food processor and add some cold water in the coffee foam so it can easily slip into the glass. It bubbles so nice! If you have a huge glass add some more cold water, I don’t…
I add a dash of cold milk and have my tasty, low calorie ‘ice cream’!
Drink with a straw.
40 degrees: Four ice cubes, drank in 6 minutes.
After taken some 1o pictures today, had countless ‘clicks’ to upload, mistakenly deleted, take anew, re-size, upload again and post the pictures, I made up my mind about ‘writing about heat wave” being a easy topic … After the pictures precedure was over I had almost forgotten what exactly I wanted to write about…
I also made up my mind about ’environmental protection and Air Conditioning’. My ecological sensitivities have been tried very hard and were defeated these last weeks. I am fed up with the ongoing blowing of two fans day and night and thus without a real relief. Folks! It’s over! I’ll buy one A/C! Better two, I ‘d say…
