Greek Foreign Ministry spokesman dismisses Turkey’s casus belli as “unacceptable” and repeats that extending territorial waters to 12 nautical miles is the right of Greece according to the Law of the Sea. He also says, it is unacceptable for a candidate to European Union to threaten with war a member-country of the EU.

Briefing the media earlier today, Greek FM spokesman, Grigoris Delavekouras, answered questions on Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu statement that Ankara cannot lift the casus belli as an unilateral move towards Greece.

The main point of Greek FM spokesman are:

- The option to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles is the right of Greece which is expressly provided in the United Nations  Law of the Sea and is part of the European Union acquis.
- There shall be no threat of war nowadays from  a candidate country for membership in the European Union against a member of the European Union in view of international relations in our time
but also given that this is explicitly prohibited by the Charter of the United Nations.
- Greece is a country which continues to consistently support the European perspective of Turkey, because we believe it is in the long term interest of our own country. All this is not going to happen
without the explicit performance requirements set by both Greece and the European Union.
- We  make an effort to improve our relations, we will continue this effort to get the desired result. But we always take very careful steps, always under the  light . that these do not harm in any way
   the sovereign rights of Greece.

Mr. Delavekouras said that Turkish FM Ahmetoglu is scheduled to visit Athens end of October or beginning of November but that the exact date has not been set yet.
