Greek Souvlaki under Government Attack!

Souvlaki is the for Greeks what Hamburger is for Americans, Bratwurst for Germans and Döner-Kebab for Turks.

Souvlaki is our favorite junk food, the super yummy WoW meal, no matter what! Our national snack and best known Greece’s ambassador worldwide comes in all versions for all taste buds and all cholesterol levels.

Souvlaki is worth a sin

The base of souvlaki are pork meat cubes on a wooden skewer grilled on an open fire.

The grilled meat cubes, normally spiced with salt, black pepper and oregano, are served in different versions:

Light version: meat cubes served with a piece of bread and a slice of lemon (Kalamaki).

Normal version: meat cubes, tomatoes, onions, chopped parsley and a dash of hot red pepper wrapped in a pitta bread (Comple).

Fat version: The normal version + tzatziki sauce and french fries (Apola)

Oh-I’m-gonna-die version: Fat version but very spicy Gyros instead of meat cubes, the pitta bread is dipped in oil, and mustard is being added. (No picture as kids may read this blog!)

Whether plain, wrapped or full-fat the souvlaki has been deligthing millions of Greeks since they remember themselves.

Chubby children? Cholesterol-trapped middle-ages? Arteriosclerotic seniors? Souvlaki is worth a sin. Then we grow up with its distinguishing taste coming out of the specific ingredients combination. We have souvlaki’s savory in our DNA!
