Athens: Cloudy Sunday (English Subtitles)

This is a magic number today: 10/10/10. No, we didn’t get crazy and our PCs were not infected by a tech-deadly virus. At least not so far… Athens down town is closed to car traffic due to the big Bicycle Race. Avaaz.org and Athens Green Design organize lots of event at Syntagma Square.

But it is a cloudy and a bit chilly Synday. For the lazy ones, time to rest at home with loads of Sunday newspapers….

“Cloudy Sunday” was written and composed by Vassilis Tsitsanis in 1936. It’s a kind of “Anthem” for many Greeks. The version below is performed by Sotiria Bellou. It has English subtitles.

Vassilis Tsitsanis (1915 – 1984) was a Greek songwriter and bouzouki player. He became one of the leading Greek composers of his time and is widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Rebetika. Tsitsanis wrote more than 500 songs and is still remembered as an extraordinary bouzouki player.

Sotiria Bellou (1921 – 1997) was a famous Greek singer and performer of the Greek rebetiko style of music. She was one of the most famous rebetisas of all, mentioned in many music guides, and a contributor to the 1984 British Documentary entitled Music of the Outsiders.
