Greeks deeply disppointed by politicians & politics – Polls

Greeks are deeply disappointed by the politicians and the political system. Furthermore they are very pessimistic about the future of  the economy and do not seem to believe much the proclamations for development as trumpeted by the government. Two polls published in Sunday newspapers clearly demonstrate  Greek citizens’s attitude: Politics and Politicians are disdained.

According to nationwide survey KAPA Research for the newspaper “To Vima“, over 51.5% of citizens say they are not at all satisfied with the work of the government and only 26.7% said, they were a bit satisfied.

45.2% show negative standtowards the handling of Prime Minister George Papandreou.

An important feature of the survey is the increasing number of people who believe that we could have avoided the use of the support mechanism and the signing of the memorandum.

45.2% (compared with 37% last April) state they are not satisfied at all with PM Papandreou’s handling, while a rate of 18.2% (compared with 22% in last April) say they are quite satisfied.

Impressive 65,6% say Greece could have avoided the memorandum (compared to 41,9% last April).

However although things do not look good for governing party PASOK, main opposition Nea Dimokratia (leader Antonis Samaras) still do not win citizen’s trust.

44,9% believe that things would have been worse under a Nea Demokratia government. Only 14,3% believe things would have been better.

41% say they trust PM George Papandreou and only 23.4% of Antonis Samaras.

In another poll, published by SKAI TV and “Kathimerini” Sunday edition, Greek people show an impressive amount of disapproval towards the two main political parties.

78% of people are frustrated by the government (PASOK, Papandreou) and 89% by the main opposition (Nea Dimokratia).

Pessimism about the economic situation is extremely high.

70% believe their economic situation has worsened since the last year, while only 2% say their finances have been improved.

58% of participants feel that Greece is now weaker in the international arena, 26% said the situation is the same and 14% that is better.

Concerning the tendency of participating to the upcoming local elections (November 7, 2010), one-third (33,3 %) of the participants indicates that they will either refrain from voting or they will submit an “invalid” or  a “white” vote.
