Athens: First Hospital for Children with Cancer
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Society
A little bit of hope was given today to children suffering from cancer. The first Cancer Hospital for Children was inaugurated today in Goudi, suburb of Athens.
The hospital has 138 beds so children can accommodate with their parent. It consists of five buildings connected to each other and has module bone marrow transplantation, oncology and hematology nursing units, 24 ambulance daily beds, pain centre, radio-therapy unit and blood center.
As the impact of cancer on children and their families is incredible, as cancer steals the young patients’ tender childhood years and often convicts them to isolation, the hospital resamples more to a modern & merry hotel. It has a school and two playground, a guest house and an amphitheater. On administration level it belongs to Agia Sofia state hospital.
The hospital came into life after the initiative of Marianna Vardinoyianni, president of the NGO Association of Friends of Children with Cancer “Hope” and wife of Greek oil tycoon Vardis Vardinoyiannis.
The hotel was built and the equipment was acquired by the “Hope” association and people’s donations. The project needed almost 10 years to materialize, as the Greek state failed to show the necessary commitment as it had promised.
