Erdogan: Greek-Turkish Reciprocal Steps; Firm on avoiding Netanyahu
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Politics
The importance of reciprocal steps between Greece and Turkey was stressed by Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan only days before visiting Athens to attend the Summit on Climate Change. At the same time he appeared firm on not meeting Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu.
Speaking to Alexis Papachelas from SKAI TV, Tayyip Erdogan said on the casus belli that the countries should not apply it and he expressed confidence on Greek PM Papandreou, advising to abandon views stuck in the past.
“I do not see why there cannot be an agreement on the Aegean and we should be ready to cooperate … With my friend Mr. Papandreou we try to change the way things are … Both countries should not do what is constituted in the casus belli and I would say that we should not fall into traps set by those wanting to inflame tensions. “
Asked about the most disputed Turkish aircraft flying over the Aegean, Tayyip Erdogan claimed flights were not as often as in the past and at the same time he admitted political weakness towards the powerful Turkish General Staff.
”We do not want to see flights at all, but the General Staff is ‘sensitive’ about the issue and I am saddened.”
Turkish Prime Minister reiterated that the Aegean should be sea of friendship and peace, and that the two countries should agree on joint investments and benefits at national and international level.
Firm on not meeting with Netanyahu
Tayyip Erdogan is firm on not having any meeting with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, something that Papandreou had proposed in an effort to diffuse tension between Turkey and Israel.
