HURRAY! Half Million Elder Greeks to get an aid of 100 Euro!
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Economy
I saw thousands of elderly dancing on the streets this morning! They were so thrilled, they couldn’t even answer my question why the excitement… But then I found out: Greek government has announced the one time aid of € 100-300 to 500,000 low income pensioners. The aid will be distributed by end of December.
Many elderly in Greece live on a pension of 400-600 euro per month. The Greek-IMF bailout mechanism has deprived them of EUR 800-1,200 per year.
According to polls, Greek PM Papandreou is facing a political disaster in the upcoming local elections in November. Most probably the proclaimed aid is targeting the votes of the elderly. I am not questioning the political motives, but it looks to me like a “cheap scorn.”
Anyway, I am afraid that by December, all pensioners will have spent in advance the aid in Champagne & Caviar… OPS! I forgot ‘lopster’ on Christmas Eve…
