Greece: UEFA’s Next Big Scandal? Fixed Matches, Illegal Betting, Fraud
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Sports
The prosecution of two Greek soccer ‘officials’ is a matter of time, local media report. Allegedly there is evidence that both officials bet big amounts of money on certain soccer matches. The one bet EUR 1 million on a certain football match, while the other, apparently a soccer player, bet seven times the amount of 6,000 euros again on a certain match!
Prosecutor’s investigation has progressed quite far since Wednesday and it has become known that the bank accounts of 20 presidents of Greek soccer teams are about to be opened and investigated. There is also a list of 1,000 people , who illegally bet on the fixed gameson internet.
The prosecutor has the intention to ask the support of UEFA, the European Football body, and ask Peter Limacher, former UEFA representative, to testify. Last year German authorities and UEFA investigated about 200 European football games in a match-fixing inquiry.
Investigation targets an unknown number of soccer matches in Super League and Cup games.
Players, coaches, referees, soccer officials are to be checked on illegal betting, matches-fixing and fraud.
Investigation goals
1) Investigate and compare the list of UEFA on fixed-matches.
2) Check intermediaries and those who provided information in advance on the set up games, suspected managers and soccer clubs.
3) Soccer players, who bet on the fixed-games. A player who seems to have bet 7 times the same day in the same match from 6,000 euro at a time.
4) Illegal internet betting. The prosecutor has a list of 948 people who allegedly became rich through illegal betting. There is the example of a certain person, who bet EUR 1 million on a specific match and earned EUR 10 millions after one and a half hour.
Funny enough the evidence at the prosecutor’s hands are the collected receipts by the two betters for tax purposes!
