Some Greeks voted for a … Donkey!

The ballot’s name S.A.NO is an acronym from a sentence calling citizens of Steni to React Early (Stenioti React Early). Phonetically the name S.A.NO translated in English means “Hay”.
The ballot came into force after a group of young people got angry at the local politicians for not materializing their promises made in previous elections.
Voters were asked to ‘check’ ideas and not candidates’ names. They could choose among ideas such as Asphalted Roads, a Seniors’ Day Centre, a Public Library, Alternative Tourism Development or A Little Bit More Love among the Villagers, only to mention a few.
Voters seemed to like the idea of a four-legged mayor and gave the Donkey-Ballot 37 votes. The next best ballot of an aspiring mayor took just 18 votes.
As the movement found big support, it is interesting to see the results of the 2nd round of polling at next Sunday. Will a donkey rule over Steni?
As the ballot proclaims: “ We all vote for donkeys!”
The word ‘donkey‘ has a negative connotation in Greek. Calling somebody a “Donkey” in Greek , it means the person is simply ”indifferent” and “doesn’t care for others”…
