At least we kicked Austrians’ butts in soccer. Too bad those butts belonged to wrong bodies…
VIENNA — Georgios Fotakis made one goal and then scored the winner on his international debut to give Greece a 2-1 victory over Austria in a friendly on Wednesday. The PAOK midfielder was left unmarked in the 81st minute when he collected a pass by Georgios Samaras and fired into the far corner past goalkeeper Christian Gratzei.
Fotakis set up Greece’s opening goal in the 48th minute, when Samaras met his cross from the right with a header that wrongfooted Gratzei.
Fotakis came on as a second-half substitute for Panagiotis Kone, the other Greek player to earn his first cap.
Austria defender Christian Fuchs equalized with his first international goal in 36 matches, his powerful 25-meter attempt taking goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas by surprise in the 67th minute.
Austria dominated the first half and was awarded a penalty in the fifth minute after Sokratis Papastathopoulos fouled Stefan Maierhofer. However, defender Florian Klein’s low shot was easily saved by Tzorvas.
Austria coach Dietmar Constantini left captain Marc Janko out of the starting lineup in favor of Maierhofer, who also replaced Janko in Austria’s previous two games when the FC Twente striker was out with a groin injury.
Maierhofer had a goal disallowed for pushing Tzorvas in an aerial contest for the ball from Fuchs’ pass in the 36th.
Greece, the 2004 European champions, is unbeaten in six matches since coach Fernando Santos took over from Otto Rehhagel after the World Cup
