Ex German Minister blames Karamanlis for Greek crisis

Ex Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis (2004-2009) is to blame for the Greek crisis, says former German Minister Hans Eichel, the Finance Minister who signed Greece’s accession to Euro in the year 2000.
In an interview to Greek newspaper TO VIMA, Sunday edition, former German Finance Minister Hans Eichel says that
“Nobody tricked Brussels in 2000, but what occured in 2009, before the elections, was that the government said the deficit was 6,4%. It was immediately proved to be 13,6%, later even at 15,4% as the Troika recently found out. That was not a trick, that was a first class fraud!”
Fraud here and neglecting there, Hans Eichel admits also that Greece was not economically fit for the Euro back in the year 2000. He said:
“In 2000 Greece was not at the same level as France and Germany and that the statistics service wasn’t the best. Everybody knew that Greece did not meet the Maastricht criteria for the overall deficit.”
Why was Greece allowed to join the Euro-club then??? We may know more on Sunday, as TO VIMA publishes only a short excerpt today…
Hans Eichel takes the floor of a Greek newspaper indirectly to answer to German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s accusations that the German Socialdemocrats acted “superficially” regarding Greece’s accession to Euro.
