Facts and upcoming posts about Greece, Nov 29

There are quite some news from Greece today and I can’t make up my mind which one to pick first and start posting. That’s why I start with a summary of “Facts and Factors ‘ and news I am going to post more or less during the day – of course, there maybe be news that will happen and so far I have not developed any ‘psychic qualities’:
Seamen Strike: They will hold a meeting and decide how they will proceed further. The government is considering to ‘mobilize’ the striking seamen as anger is growing on the islands. Agriculture producers are desperate to see their products go rotten. The strike has been going on for seven days now.
IMF/EU Loan Repayment Extension: That’s an interesting topic to write about as it remains vague what loans will be affected. Furthermore there is the question whether an extension is good for Greece, a country known to easily throw overboard directives and measures.
Talking about IMF…. there was an interesting meeting between the IMF-boys and some Greek reporters last week. The meeting was ‘spontaneous’ and the IMF-team had the chance to chat with the press about the economic future of Greece over a drink or two… or were they three?
Weeks’ Strikes:
- All Greek media will go on strike tomorrow, November 30, 2010, as massive Layoffs have already started
- IKA doctors will be on a 48hours strike, November 30 and December 1, 2010
Wikileaks
“All quite at the Greek front”, so far…. We’ll see if it will remain silent. Only an embassy dispatch about Ankara and Cyprus issuehas been published. But it’s interesting to read what the US administration thinks of Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan and his friends and how the relations toIsrael are perceived.
Oil in the Aegean
The news coming from a relevant Conference in Athens speak of huge reserves in the Aegean Sea. Thus I found an interesting article on a French website (plus map) onhow to deliminate the Greek territorial waters (sic!)
Animal Abuse
There is no end in Greece and I should definitely write about…
MIX issues:
Greek media continue reporting on possible wages cuts of up to 25% in the private sector through new labor contracts and on new waves of jobless -currently government employees with temporary contracts- steming from the IMF/EU Memorandum. OH! I shouldn’t forget the new hikes on Value Added Tax from 11% to 23%.
There are governmental efforts to achieve decreases in retail prices.
An interesting issue is the upcoming price hikes in DEH- electricity bills and some juicy details about how the State Electricity Company-DEH gave a loan to its own trade unionists.
There is some mobilization in the Greek prisons. Apparently prisoners were about to start some protests today.
Do you want to know in details about all these issues???
If you see a yellow cloud covering Athens… it’s just the Sahara dust…
