Ankara blames France, Austria and Cyprus for hampering Turkey’s EU accession.
According to news portal in.gr quoting the leaked diplomatic dispatches from wikileaks, Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu said so to William Burns, US Undersecretary of State during a meeting on February 25, 2010.
Sinirlioglu blames the Greek Cypriots for “indifference” that stems from “the fact that Eu membership makes them invulnerable”. He said that Cypriots want to forget the progress achieved by the Annan Plan in 2004.
Concerning Greek-Turkish Relations, Sinirlioglu, who is heading the Turkish side on Greek/Turkish exploratory talks on the Aegean dispute, welcomed Greek Prime Minister Papandreou’s belated response to Erdogan’s letter of October 30, 2009 . Based on Papandreou’s response, Sinirlioglu was assuming that new talks with Greece on several long-term disputes would begin soon. (sources: in.gr/Greek, famagusta-gazette/English )
OK, these leaked news are everything but breathtaking! But apparently Turkey asked more USA involment on the Cyprus issue in return of Turkey’s support against Iran. Well, that’s how diplomacy works, doesn’t it?
Yet some 1,313 diplomatic cables were dispatched from US-embassy in Athens (2002-2010) and 7,918 from Ankara (2001-2010). They are expected to be leaked by wikileaks within the next days. We might see more interesting ‘diplomatic secrets’ there. Nevetheless the leaks create the total diplomatic disaster in the diplomacy of the USA.
