Greek Justice Minister: Germany should apologize for WWII atrocities

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Politics

Greece is seriously considering to bring to International Justice some of the German atrocities during the World  War II and claim the  much disputed war reparations from Germany. Justic Minister Haris Kastanidis said at the Greek Parliament that the ministry is seriously considering the issue and its legal base in cooperation with the Foreign ministry.

He stated  that in case Greece applies to International Court of  Justice in The Hague about the Distomo case*, it has to do it until January 14, 2011 when the deadline for the relevant appeal expires.

Using a very strong – and undiplomatic - language Haris Kastanidis called on current political leadership of  Germany to follow the example of  Willy Brandt, who kneeled in front of a concentration camp and apologized from the international community.

While responding to those in Germany who speak about ”budgetary discipline” and “virtues that should prevail in Europe”, Greek Justice Minister said  “they should first respect them,  ….particularly those who showed no virtues respect for the shake of their expansion” .

The discussion about the war reparations has been revived in recent days after several questions to the government by Greek lawmakers from the left and far-right political spectrum. It is estimated that Germany owes Greece some EUR 70 billion.
