Athens: Rally to commemorate killed teenager boy – traffic regulations (Dec 6)

Main roads will be closed to traffic in downtown Athens tomorrow Monday, December 6, 2010, due to rallies to commemorate the assassination of teenager boy Alexandros Grigoropoulos killed by a policeman two years ago.
Traffic regulations ban vehicles from parking in the majority of streets in city’s heart and will apply from Monday 10:00 a.m. to Tuesday 07:00 a.m. Main streets will also be closed to traffic.
The rally, which is expected to be massive, is scheduled to start at Panepistimioy Avenue, outside the Athens University by 12:00 noon.
Alexandros Grigoropoulos, 15, was killed in a fatal shooting by a policeman on December 6, 2008 near Exarchia Square. The assignation sparked large demonstrations of angry youths that turned into violent riots in Athens.
Only recently, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, interior minister at that time, told a documentary program that his government had considered to use the armed forces during the massive riots of 2008. Yet the idea was rejected as being considered as counter productive. The documentary was aired on state NET television.
Last October the policeman was found guilty for the boy’s death and was jailed for life.
