Greece’s Annus Horribilis 2010

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Editor

The year that ends will go into the history of the country as Greece’s Annus Horribilis. How else can we describe the year that brought the country at the edge of a very deep economic cliff? We lost our dignity as a country, we lost our dignity as people.

We got a load on our shoulders, weighing 110 billion euros. The threat of a total economic collapse has not been averted. Greek bonds spreads have reached blistering levels and make it impossible for the country to turn back to international markets. Should the country be unable to pay back interest rates of a single loan tranche, then we might see state properties change hands within seconds at humiliating value price.

Annus Horribilis 2010 is the year that made Greece hostage to IMF and target of any blackmailing global investment company and rating agency.

We saw our wages,  bonuses and pensions decline. We saw taxes and prices increase. It came even worst: We lost our jobs.

However Annus Horribilis 2010 stripped the political and economic system  in the eyes of the citizens. People have turned deaf to politician’s statements, proclamations, trumpetings and promises. Will the snobbish Greek state finally change its mentality? There is a challenge coming up with the sparkling New Year…

We, the common citizens, we’ll try to go through 2011. And we’ll be waiting to see those responsible for the collapse of the Greek state pay the price.

Happy New Year !
