Athens: New Taxi fares from/to Airport as of Febr 1, 2011

Angry about paying higher prices to taxi drivers taken you from airport to Athens downtown and vice versa? These times are over! Ministry of Transport has published special fares for the taxis to and from Athens airport to city downtown.

From 5 a.m. to 12 midnight you will pay  € 35. In the fare are included VAT, starting fare. airport fee, baggage fees and Attiki highway tolls.

From 12:0 at midnight until  5 a.m. you will pay the so called “double fare”, that will be € 50.

The specified tariffs concern only Athens downtown which is the area of the so called ‘small traffic ring’. Roughly the area extends form Alexandras Avenue in the North, Frantzi-Syggrou in the South, Pireaus-Constantinoupoleos in the West and Michalakopoulou-Ymittou in the East.

If you are unlucky enough to live in Palaio Faliro, for example, you pay according to the usual charging.

I assume the Ministry’s decision is aiming only to foreign tourists who often fall victim of greedy taxi drivers. Not that Greeks are unscathed from being over charged, but the Greek state wants to boost tourism, better say Tourism in Athens!, (and get rid of Greek citizens who don’t pay their taxes anyway…)

The new fares start as of February 1, 2011.
