Athens: Hunting the illegal parking
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Very Mix
New Athens mayor, Giorgos Kaminis, is determined to tackle illegal car parking and give a human face to the historical centre of Greek capital.
Since new mayor took office on January 1, municipality policemen are walking around with grim expressions and fine motorists who have parked their cars illegally: mostly on double parking lanes, blinds’ lanes and on parking slots for disabled. In some cases they even remove the car plates, when motorists leave their car on sidewalks with lanes for blinds or parking slots for disabled.
More than 200 fines have been handed to motorists and 100 plates have been removed so far.
The fine is 100-200 euros.
Thousands of vehicles reach Athens downtown daily, with parking areas rare and parking fees at vertigo creating heights. Just recently I saw very close to Syntagma Square a parking company offering € 10 (ten euros!!! ) for the first parking hour.
Motorists park their vehicles wherever they want, turning sidewalks and squares into parking slots and forcing pedestrians to slender on the street through moving cars.
However Athens Municipality shows a “heart” for wrong doers on the days when public transportation is on strike.
