The multi-sports event “Mediterranean Games 2013″ will have to find another host, then Greece proved unable to fulfil its commitments. At an extraordinary session in Paris, the International Committee for the Mediterranean Games decided to withdraw Greece’s hosting as the debt-ridden country showed significant delays in constructing the Village for the athletes.
Greece had promised to construct two villages for the 4,000 athletes in Volos and Larisa towns in Central Greece. However Athens could not come up for the cost amounting 150 million euros decided to host the athletes in hotels and cruise ships. A proposal that was turned down by the Committee.
Greek media report that the decision to withdraw the hosting was taken by an absolute majority (12-1). The Committee has still to decide about which city will host the Med Games 2013, with favorites being Tarragona in Spain and Mersin in Turkey.
The Med Games 2013 will begin on June 24 and conclude July 3 with the participation of 4,000 athletes from 24 countries mainly bordering the Mediterranean Sea, when Europe, Africa and Asia meet.
The Games take place every four years. Greece was entitled to host the Games in 2007.
What a shame! Why don’t they use the Olympic Games 2004 facilities? They rot day by day, anyway…
