More than forty football hooligans armed with cocktail Molotov, crowbars and other items and chanting Olympiakos fan slogans, burned and destroyed a large part of the stage of the Art Theatre Karolos Koun in Athens downtown on Friday night. The attack occurred less than an hour before a play titled “Travelling with PAOK, a Larissa station story” was to be presented.
More than 150 people were at the theater at the time, most of them waiting to get in.
They hooligans attacked them and managed to leave just before the police arrived. One worker was slightly injured inside the venue, while trying to protect two others.
PAOK Thessaloniki is a Greek soccer team, a rival of Olympiakos Piraeus.
The play director said that the story had nothing to do with theatre.
Culture Minister Pavlos Geroulanos promised that the ministry will come up for the damages and stressed that “the threatre is not a soccer field”.
Tonight’s performance will take place under police protection, Greek media reported.
The theatre is located in the Plaka district of Athens.
