Athens: Some people are frustrated and angry

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Economy, Society

I post slowly today due to … issues I had to fix! And long telephone conversations with a couple of  frustrated friends. I slowly believe that the residents of Athens are getting more and more  angry and can’t get rid of the feeling of helplessness and a cloud of depression.

Nothing seems to work. Strikes no matter which side you are looking at. Bad quality of life caused by deteriorating public services, public transport lines cuts and crime increase. Jobless who have not a single euro income and no perspective to get a job. Not to mention the situation on the health sector – I have written enough about and I am fed up!

Nena is “fed up with the government officials bombarding us the populist arguments supported with the majority of the media”.

Maria is desperate then soon she will have no money to buy food and pay utilities.

And Nikos has invited me to make a report about the front of his shop in down town Athens. “Every morning I have to clean up people’s pup and addicts’ needles. No customer dares to come to my shop. Police does nothing even if  they stand less than 100 metres away”.

So sum up: We all agree, we have the impression the government is sitting under a transparent jar and has neither idea nor does it care about the people’s needs. That still the mentality of  ‘support our political friends and supporters’ prevail.

As Nikos said, “I would support the austerity measures, should the govenrment  do something for me too, but no such thing happens”.

We are progressive people of a socialist or left-wing background. And we slowly get reactionary as we feel pushed to the other side. Go figure….
