American Jewish Leaders to meet the Greek Political Leadership

I am impressed! The fifty members of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organisations, currently in Greece for their annual meeting, will have talks with the political creme de la creme of what the humble and debt-ridden country has to offer.
Staring with the President of the Greek Republic and Prime Minister George Papandreou the American Jewish leaders will check their appointments list down to the Mayor of Athens and even the Prefect of Attika.
Of course, they will also meet the Jewish Communities in Athens and Thessaloniki, the Ambassador of Israel and the US diplomats’ representative.
I think it is the first time a foreign, non state, non commercial delegation will be received by so many Greek state officials. Not even at the peak of Greek-Turkish rapprochement, ten years ago, could 20 Turks manage to meet so many high level officials, let alone fifty.
And here is the point. The conference of the PMAJO takes place in Greece after an invitation of PM Papandreou.
Moreover it is understood that the American Jewish delegation aims to boost further the warm ties between Greece and Israel, especially after the cool off between Ankara and Tel Aviv.
After a hot summer engagement with mutual visits of Papandreou and Netanyahu, the Leviathan discovery and the cooperation between Cyprus and Israel prepared the ground for a happy wedding. Maybe not based in love but for sure on economic mutual interests. Last month State Minister Haris Pamboukis said that the two countries had started talks on energy cooperation.
I am sure that the one or the other American Jewish Presidents will find his way between a shmooze and a gefilte fish to talk a kosher word for the one deal or the another.
It’s only a pity that US Secretary of State could not be present, as originally scheduled, to bless the new love affair emerging from the blue waters of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations takes place from 8 to 13 February 2011.
The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations visits a different country each year as part of their annual trip to Israel, and this is their first time visiting Greece. The delegation includes Presidents and Executive Directors of some 50 American organizations that are members of the Conference, as well as heads of European Jewish communities.
Meeting shedule
The visit will start in Thessaloniki, where the Conference of Presidents will meet with the Mayor and Vice Mayor, tour sites of Jewish and archaeological interest, and dine with members of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, politicians, local officials and prominent members of the business community.
In Athens, the delegation with be received by the President of the Republic on Wednesday, 9 February, and a Conference will take place at the King George hotel on Thursday, 10 February, with the participation of the Prime Minister and the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, National Defence, Citizen Protection, Culture & Tourism and State. During their stay in Athens, the Conference of Presidents will also be received by the Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament and meet with other political and religious officials, including the Prefect of Attiki, the Mayor of Athens and the Jewish Community of Athens. There will be meetings with the U.S. and Israeli Ambassadors to Athens. ( source: Greece’s Foreign Ministry)
