Fourteen immigrants on hunger strike since 35 days have been taken to several hospitals in Athens with signs of extreme exhaustion. Some of them have severe dehydration and kidney failure.

“They refuse even to drink water and the doctors fear that more striking immigrant will have to get hospitalized” said Petros Giotis, member of  the Solidarity Initiative, an immigrant support network.

Some 250 illegal immigrants are on hunger strike, demanding to be legalized and get a residence permit. Demands that have been rejected by the government.

In Thessaloniki there is another group of 50 immigrant on hunger strike decided to stop taking sugar and drink only water and salt.

A spokesperson of the group said that some men who weighted 80 kilos at the beginning of the strike are now down to 44 kg. Several men have been taken to the hospital due to fainting.

The majority of the immigrants are from Morocco. They had entered Greece illegally some 10 years ago.

The government refuses to negotiate with them or grant them residence permit fearing that such act will open the Pandora’s box for the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants living in Greece.
