It is the 39th day of hunger strike and 98 migrants are been treated for dehydration and kidney failure in several hospitals of Athens and Thessaloniki. Meanwhile the government tries to find a solution to the problem out of fear for a loss of human life.

Citizens’ Protection Minister Christos Papoutsis proposed them Thursday a temporary 6-month residence permit and a meeting to discuss the issue.

However they hunger strikers insist for the legalization of all illegal immigrants – a demand that even the “Greek Association for Human Rights” considers as unrealistic.

 Hunger Strike causes  government rift

A government rift occurred yesterday when Defence Minister Evangelos Venizelos stated that “under no circumstances the situation should lead to a loss of human life”.

This statement drew the reaction of Interior Minister Yiannis Ragousis who said in a statement that “no member of the government should publicly comment without previous consultation as they lack knowledge of all the details. Ragousis also asked whether Venizelos proposes the legalisation of the illegal immigrants.
