The body of one man was discovered in the early morning hours in Athens downtown. Municipality workers found the dead man in the Thission Park, near the train station. Although the autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow, Greek media but also the Mayor of Athens claimed the death was due to freezing temperatures. Last night snowfall and low temperatures held the Greek capital in their grip with temperatures down to the freezing point. A couple of minutes ago, state television NET reported that the man was a migrant from Cameroun, aged 45 years old, who used to live in the Thissions park.

Earlier the Athens Municipality and the Greek media reported of three dead men found in the park.

Speaking to portal NewsIt, Athens Municipality City Council and responsible for the City’s Homeless Centre Yiannis Sfakianakis said that centre’s volunteers had visited the park last night but saw no homeless around.

Athens and Thessaloniki Municipalities had organized sleeping bags and hot beverages for homeless due to the bad weather conditions.

According to Sfakianakis, last night they offered hot soup, tea, sleeping bags and blankets to 24 points in Athens and even persuaded 7 homeless to sleep in the premises of the centre.

Athens Municipality offers daily 3,000 meals to people in need.

Latest data from non-governmental organisation “Klimaka”  estimated that 10,000 homeless live in the city of Athens. The counting survey included not only those sleeping on city benches but also those who have not enough to eat.

The Greek NGO spoke of a new class of homeless, the “Neo-Homeless“, ie  people who lost their house due to the harsh economic crisis.
