Tension prevailed on Friday morning in Athens downtown when protesting state hospitals personnel attempted to enter the Ministry of Health. Doctors, healthcare and ambulance personnel had gathered outside the ministry to protest the deteriorating situation in Greek state hospitals after the imposed strict austerity measures. When ambulance drivers from EKAB units tried to enter the ministry, the strong riot police forces fired teargas to foil the attempts.

The angry protesters hurled coffee cups and other items against the police, SKAI TV reported. The protesters came out also with one or two rude expressions against some general secretary of the ministry…

Health personnel claims they have been paid nights swifts and holidays work for the last 5 months. The EKAB personnel claim there are only 60 ambulance vehicles for 6-7 million people.

EKAB is on ‘strike’ since last Monday, state hospitals doctors and health care personnel have a work stoppage today 11:00 am – 02:00 pm and will join the 24h strike on May 11, 2011.
