Greeks tend to believe Strauss-Kahn sex allegations a plot

As I try to …. do my best and distract your attention from the tsunami of new austerity measures will soon hit us, I want to write about an issue that caught me by surprise over the weekend. Meanwhile even my cat knows every detail about THE sex allegations case involving  Dominique Strauss-Kahn and the hotel maid, about the ex- afffairs and allegations of ex IMF-Head, currently in rented house arrest for sex assault allegations. And yet! Although I personally seem to be convinced that he is got his tail involved, I was surpsised to hear friends and friends of friends to believe the ‘rape case was a set up’. I was surprised on Saturday, I was surprised on Sunday… Greeks supporting Strauss-Kahn? Isn’t that weird? Or is it just a media campaign that managed its aim: to create confusion and trigger doubt on the victims’ credibility.

I tend to believe that this has to do with the fact that Greeks love consiracy theories. Aliens, chemtails, Strauss-Kahn – they are all chapters of the same book : Dark and powerful forces aiming to disolve the Greeks as a nation!

Furthermore, I was even more surprise to hear by the friends and their friends, that the hotel maid raised the allegations long time after the ‘incident’ happened. Which is a totally wrong information as the Sofitel-maid immediately complained about Strauss-Kahn. So how comes such a false information reaches the TV viewers?

As more and more Greeks have stopped buying newspapers, television became their only source of information and occasional misinformation.

“Strauss-Kahn” comes in the sole TV-blender smashing the daily influx of news that bombard the average Greek in blistering speed with huge amounts of euro-debt,  contradictory statements of local and international officials,  news changes in new taxation law, additional austerity and cut-all measures. Sex adds a welcome note in a grim reality, however who cares about right and wrong,  correct and false? Over 340,000,000,000 euro debt have smashed the brain cells of the average Greek as well. The Greeks who rushes and jumps from one law to the next, from one auetsrity to the next to see how and if he can come along.

Who cares about Dominique Strauss-Kahn, after all, except his wife?

PS. A survey showed that Greeks are divided as to whether the DSK-case is set up. 42% believe the allegations have a  base, while another 42% believe the case is baseless. However  87,3 do credit to the maid to inform the police about the incident. The survey was conducted by MRB (realnews.gr)
