EU’s Olli Rehn orders Greek Citizens to Accept the Austerity Program
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Economy, Politics
This is unspoken, unprecedented and unacceptable! An EU-Commissioner boldly intervenes in the internal affairs of Greece and warning that “time is running out” he orders political parties and citizens to adopt the loan agreement and the IMF-EU austerity program! According to Greek media, EU Financial Commissioner Olli Rehn issued a statement after the lack of consensus among political leaders, where he expresse the EU Commission’s reget over the failure of reaching consensus and say among others that all political parties should adopt ‘a constructive attitude, support and the implementation of the program” as ‘it requires input from all parties and citizens”. Jawohl, Herr Rehn, Zum Befehl!
The news:
The “European Commission regrets” the failure to have consensus among leaders of political parties in Greece for the economic adjustment in order to overcome the current debt crisis, EU Finance Commissioner Olli Rehn said in a written statement, calling for a continuetion of the effort to ‘critical’ consent.
The EU Commissioner stresses the need to continue efforts to reach inter-party agreement to support the joint EU-IMF program, saying that «agreement should be found soon, time is running out.”
According to Finish Commissioner ”it is crucial for the recovery of the Greek economy that all Greek political parties, including opposition parties, adopt a constructive attitude and support the implementation of the program.
The scale of the challenge “is a test for the Greek society as a whole and therefore it requires input from all parties and citizens,” Olli Rehn concluded. (in.gr, Athens News Agency & others)
Jawohl, Herr Rehn, Zu Befehl! – Yes, Mr. Rehn! At your orders! -. However it should be clear whether there is a condition in the Memorandum of Understanding that all political parties and the citizens are obliged to adopt and implement the MoU.
Make it clear, then we are not aware of it!

I can’t believe what I read!
Are such orders a sign of mental sickness?
Rehn is from Finland, he doesn´t understands “Jawohl, Herr Rehn, Zum Befehl!”
I know but some Finns speak German due so their WWII past – n worst case he can ask Merkel to translate. Moreover German is the perfect language to orders giving and obeying
These banksters and self-named “elite” are just afraid of their cleptocratic regime being busted. Of course they will fight “until death” to keep their big cars, salaries, pensions & prostitutes. Nothing else matters to them.
I’m German, and believe me, the majority of the people here won’t mind to help the Greek people. But the money taken from us is not going to them, it’s just going to the big banks. In all of Europe the Middle Class is sucked out fast now. Seems to be the endgame of the fiatmoney ponzi.
nice to be on the same wave lenght with our German friends. Wait until the Competiviveness Agreement is sealed – the whole Europe will be impoverished.
Rehndrops keep falling on our heads …
Maybe he needs a haircut …
hahaha! clever!
Was kreischt ihr denn? 8 Jahre in Saus und Braus. Nun ist pay day.
Quote: I’m German, and believe me, the majority of the people here won’t mind to help the Greek people. But the money taken from us is not going to them, it’s just going to the big banks.
F…k the EU; Greeks, keep going!
The EU is not, and never was, an organisation for the benefit of the people of Europe, it’s an organisation for the benefit of the politicians of Europe. They (the politicians) want a United States Of Europe come hell or high water and they’re not about to allow the worlds oldest democracy to get in the way of their dreams. You see now how the utopian dream of the EU is supposed to work; regardless of the wishes of the people WE will do what THEY say. Democracy? I don’t think so!
I don’t think so either! I was EU supporter but now I reconsider my choises…
Bitte mal die Füße still halten.
The moment KTG-visitors comment using insulting & offensive expressions – especially against the administrators – their comments will be minimized, edited and -even better – ‘send to Trash’. Whether they call themshelves “Goofy”, “Donald”, or “Pappnase”.

For Greece to join the European Union was an excellent choice because we are a small country and at that time especially we were surrounded by unfriendly countries. Even now, when nobody knows what will happen in the Middle East, we need to be part of Europe. However, it was a very big mistake to join the Euro as we lost control of our economy, our leaders were either corrupt or unqualified for their positions and so much money given to us in the early years especially, was squandered. When we first went to the IMF and EU, cap in hand we were advised the best ways to cut our deficits, but also how to promote growth. We have done nothing regards growth. Our banks were granted funds to lend to Industry, what they have done is to close our overdrafts, then open new accounts for exactly the same sums. This shows in their records that they have lent us finance, when in fact we haven’t had a penny more (check GREEK bank profits for the first months of this year, they are still making money). They still haven’t released the closed professions, again promoting new openings for business and we are still paying to fund public companies which don’t make money but eat it due to mismanagement and corruption. I WAS TAUGHT THAT BAD LANGUAGE IS IGNORANCE IT SHOWS A LACK OF INTELLIGENCE AS YOU ARE UNABLE TO THINK OF THE CORRECT VERB OR ADJECTIVE.
I think too Euro entrance was a mistake. Unfortunately, growth-messures are sacrificed. As long as Greek politicians don’t understand their mistakes, the protests will continue.
I read the “Need for a particular purpose; depend on for success or survival”, because that is both logical and makes sense. Nobody can force Greece to do anything. As shown time and again by the rulings of the European Court of Justice that are totally ignored here.
So why are you insisting on the definition “Specify as compulsory”? I think it even is more “Wish to have”. As I would wish we all could agree to pull ourselves out of this whole we dug.
Look, I like your blog and find it often very informative. And hope it will stay that way.
There is one simple solution for us all. We do not ask anybody for money and they can not make any demands. Right? But we choose to keep on borrowing to feed ‘the monster’ (politicians, civil servant, Deko’s and those ‘pseudo-entrepreneurs’ who lived of the state).
And be honest: how many of us have been living of the state. Either direct or indirect the last 30 years? How many of our parents are civil servants/in DEKOs? To mention just a few?
Has anybody heard one real alternative from one of the other parties? No, they just say NO. And that they will not ‘honour’ the MoU when they come to power. And how many billions have by now been burned by this government? 40 billion or so since last May? And you find it strange that EU/IMF and the other states might look for some sort of assurance that they will not lose that money too? I don’t.
No, I don’t think it’s strange IMF/EU need assurances for their money – but where does the bailout-money come from? From Rehn’s or DSK’s pockets? even the security-injections to banks come from taxpayers’ money.
Moreover, do you frankly believe it’s not a pure blackmailing towards the government that on its side passes it over to the people? Or you believe that the EU would let Greece go bankrupt and risk a hazarous domino effect for the rest of weak economies within the EU?
do you also believe that the sale off of “Greece” for 50 billion euro will solve the 340+ billion euor debt?
Other measures are needed and especially such to help the private economy grow -so far, I haven’t seen any.
PS neither my family nor my friends have any ‘relations’ with public administration/DEKO/MEKO and all the -ekos
Yes I agree with Antonis X, apart from his comments, how much EU funding we took for work which we either never started or never completed. For instance maps of Greece, we took all the funding because they trusted us, we don’t even have Athens completed, and on the islands they are still working from the 3rd fig tree to the 6th almond tree. I have heard comments the EU should have checked us more carefully but they were under the impression that they were dealing with responsible adults. You are all demonstrating because you don’t trust our politicians, after all the lies they have had in the past why should the EU or IMF not feel the same.
I wonder why people slap Greece – show me ONE country without debt!
Show me one country with the same combination of huge debt, total statism, and a total refusal to help themselves. This combination is unique for Greece.
Let us all be proud of that…?
Show me one Western country with more than ours. No it won’t solve the debt but these public companies don’t make money and this is where most of the corruption came from OTE for instance and they are badly managed. We can’t keep feeding them and waste money which could be used for business especially in the tourist industry, which is about all we have left. No I don’t have any relations in the EKO’s either KT and I don’t feel responsible for the state we are in as I sold home and business in UK and brought money into Greece and didn’t send it out. Actually we aren’t slapping Greece we would like to slap a number of Greeks though that got us into this mess.
Draxma Now! R.I.P. Euro!
The money is comming from citizens from other coutries. Those ‘gentlemen’ are paid to watch their interests too. They fail in that also, yes. But tell it to a, for example, Dutch citizen. He now has to pay about 600 euro out of his pocket to save us, here in Greece. And we do our utmost to show him that we don’t want to save ourselves…
How is that Dutch person gonna think? Especcially because his politicians is demanding extra austairity measures of him/her to cope with the Greek losses?
But calm down. Those same Dutch people are massively booking this year hollidays into Greece. My prayer is just that our fellow countrymen don’t mess the whole stuff up like last year and take this oportunity to earn some hard needed money.
And yes, I think bankrupting Greece would be less worse for the western European taxpayer then throwing money in our bottomless pit. When I see the horrible show our politicians put up yesterday I shudder. And don’t think that has been registered by the average Joe, Jan or Ulrich. They know now that the Greek elite does not want to do anything. They also know about the youth on Syntagma. In short: they know!
And where we totally agree is that the only salvation for Greece lies in measures to help the private economy grow. And yes, so far, I haven’t seen any either. On the contrary: the healthy part of the privat sector is murdered on the altar of the prevalent statism ideoligy.
What I miss in the whole discussion about GR’s debt,is the absence of ‘responsibility’ of Greeks and EU politicians (incl the Germans). They did know that Greece and other countries do not fullfil the euro criteria – and yet they were allowed to enter the club, they did know the countries are producing falsifying data. and yet! They were welcome to the Euro Club with bright smiles and red carpets.
Hardly ten years later the EURO in idea and praxis seems dead – and nobody is responsible for it? Oh yes, the Greeks, who saw products go up from 50Drs to 50euro-cents (175 drs) but the salaries remained the same…
OK this we all agree but the onus is on us, the Greeks, we put in the false figures, we had the choice, other countries joined the EU but kept their own currencies. However salaries and pensions did not remain the same, especially for Public workers. If you check wage increases since 2006 increases were approx 30%. If you check through you will find that most professions employed by the public increased by over 100% since the Euro. Don’t forget to add the increases on additional months pay, overtime, and benefits ie: 10% increase if a bank employee had to ‘travel’ from one floor to another during the working day.
I think the main point is that even if we had given wrong figures to get into the Euro,it might have worked, however our BIGGEST problem in Greece is corruption. This is why we are in such a mess. Every single Government department is corrupt. Papandreou likened us to a few bad apples but apples rot from the bottom. In Greece it started from the top and slowly, slowly over the past 30 years it has spread. Of course all societies have corrupt officials, bankers etc., but when caught they are punished. When this is tolerated, or simply ignored, then it’s a disaster.
