Stones were thrown and tear gas was fired in the town of Rio in Western Greece, when taxi drivers attempted to enter a hotel where regional members of governing party PASOK were supposed to hold a meeting. The angry taxi drivers wanted to speak with PASOK representatives, however the local police did not share their interests. The incidents were of short duration as the summer heat, the ozone and the tear gas were quick in bringing the taxi drivers back to order. The meeting was canceled, but the drivers remained for several hours in the area lurking at potential interlocutors form the government.
Tax drivers launched a 48-hour strike on Monday, protesting the opening of their profession. This morning they blocked access to the Athens airport and Piraeus harbor causing chaos among arriving or departing tourists and bringing traffic to collapse for several hours.
