What a Spectacle! Full Moon And Meteor Shower, Aug 12/13

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Tourism

Romantics around Greece unite! The majestic August full moon is rising on Saturday, August 13th. A total of  76 archaeological sites, museums and monuments throughout the country will be open to welcome the public with music concerts and other events that are free of charge. In the Attica prefecture admission will take place from 7 or 8  p.m. until midnight; some even close at 1.30 a.m. However this year, full moon worshipers won’t be able to enjoy the heaven spectacle right from the Acropolis or the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion Cape for reasons concerning the safety of visitors, so the Greek Culture and Tourism Ministry. Last year thousands flocked to the Acropolis to admire the full moon and quite some slipped in the dark; not to mention the long admission queues and blank nerves of the visitors.

Nevertheless you can admire the full moon over the Acropolis from the New Acropolis Museum or just walking around in the Dionisioy Aeropagitou Avenue. If you don’t feel like joining the crowds in downtown Athens, a spectacular view over the sea will be available from any spot of the sea coast – my favorite being the part around Palaio Faliro that you can reach per Tramway.

If you stay until late in the night, there is another heaven show: The meteor shower, visible before down on Sunday (also visible on Friday night). With 100 falling stars per hour, I am sure you will manage to make  a wish – it may even come true…

Here is a list of the full moon concerts and events around Greece, however in Greek. August full moon is the most beautiful of the year.
