Greece’s education reform bill for the universities that among others abolishes the University asylum, made some people more happy than one would have thought. According to news portal news247, Adonis Georgiades, MP of the far-right party LAOS (Popular Orthodox Rally) heralded in his private television programme that the police will close the Indymedia website. A far-left website that apparently is based at the Athens Polytechnical School. According to some circles, the site has been blamed for inciting riots in Athens.
Georgiades said “Now we don’t need permission of the Rector, thanks to the law that passed with 250 MPs’ vote at the Parliament”. And he added ”As soon as the law is published in the Official Gazette, we will ask we asked the police to enter the occupied space [ presumed to be the Polytechnical School] , something that could not happen in the past because of the university asylum.”
Georgiades concluded : “So, gentlemen of Indymedia, start running because we’re approaching.”
The Universities law submitted by Education Minister Anna Diamantopoulou was passed in principle through the Greek Parliament on Wednesday with the consensus of socialist PASOK and Conservative Nea Dimokratia. The law caused a storm of reactions among the educational community with some academics saying the law fixes only some administration problems but not the substance, the education itself.
