Wildfires have been raging for three consecutive days in Leykimi area of Evros, in North East Greece, burning down thousands of acres. The area has been declared in a state of Emergency as very strong winds broaden the fire front and hinder fire brigades from taking the situation under control. Greece asked international aid to combat these wildfires and six fire-extinguishing aircraft from Spain and and France from France are expected to arrive on Friday afternoon to help extinguish the fires.
There claims that the fire started after a tractor moving on a forest road spew sparks from the exhaust pipe. The mayor of Alexandroupolis described the situation as “tragic” saying “we just sit there and watch the fire destroying everything”. Speaking to private Skai TV the mayor also blamed the authorities for not intervened in time.
