Greek Fin Min : Economy in Purgatory

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Economy

Obviously influenced by the wildfires burning thousands of acres of agricultural and forests land across the country, Greek Finance Minister used a poetic language to describe the situation of the Greek economy. “We are on fire but we are not burning. We must be careful not to burn down the country”, said Evangelos Venizelos during a heated debate on the economy at the Greek parliament.

“There is an intermediate state between hell and paradise. The Purgatory. When you are there you have a hope to go to paradise. ”

Dante’s Inferno and Wildfires were mixed at the Greek parliament when the Greek Finance Minister spoke of ” discussion with the Troika on the macroeconomic data and goals” and chairman of left-wing party SYRIZA answered him “Hells does not renegotiate, because it is the hell.”

The hell is here and there not only for the Greek citizens but also for the government and the finance staff. After Venizelos’ gloomy and ominous forecasts that recession might reach 5.3% by the end of 2011 and that exit from the crisis is most likely to come in the middle of 2014, the picture of the economy is everything but pink. Moreover the budget plan of 2011 but also those of 2012 and 2013 may need to be reset.

I wonder whether new new new austerity measures will be necessary to meet the targets of the Mid Term Austerity programme that came into force with the blessings of the EU/IMF/ECB Troika.
