Shock! Soccer Fan Stabbed to Death on Crete

Greece is shocked by the tragic death of a 22-year old soccer fan who was stabbed during clashes between fans of two local rival football clubs on the island of Crete. Two more soccer fans are in hospital with slight injuries. The incidents began at 3 a.m. at the quay of Iraklion city near the Cretan Football stadium. 15 fans from OFI FC and 15 from Herodotus FC and PAO, all armed with rafters, bottles, knives, stones and iron sticks and wearing helmets arrived at a scheduled meeting point to solve their differences with violence.
The situation soon got out of control, the fans – or better say: the hooligans – started fighting body-to-body and just half an hour after the start the 22-year old was found lying on the street bleeding. He was taken to a nearby hospital but doctors could not save his life.

The two injured are 19 and 21 years old.
After the death of the fan became known, the hooligans put two motorcycles on fire.
The police has detained six people and is investigating the death hoping to identify the perpetrator.
Violence has become a common practice in recent months among FC fans in Greece. The reasons? Most likely the big football scandals and the economic crisis and unemployment among the youth.

Greece is shocked? Why? It is not the first time, nor will it be the last. On March 29, 2007 a Panathinaikos ‘fan’ was stabbed in Paiania in clashes with Olympiakos ‘fans’.
When I remember right, a lot of arrests were made. There was even a video on YouTube. But, and I quote Wiki, “On December 6, 2007 it became known that legal discrepancies in the way suspects were examined by the police, rendered their statements invalid, even though some had confessed. This resulted in the case of manslaughter being put in the archives and legal proceedings to be filed only for minor charges.” The alleged murderer was later beaten up at an amateur football game…
IMHO, this has nothing to do with the economic situation.
that it has happened once it doesn’t mean that it can’t shock us… Furthermore it is a common social phenomenon that viloence increases when people are frustrated about their living conditions, isn’t it?
