What’s Up in Greece on Oct 9?

A winter prelude in up in Greece today, literally and metaphorically. Temperatures dropped and it’s chilly outside with just 21 degrees Celsius. Rain is expected and even snow on the mountains. Not to forget the winds blowing even with 9 Beaufort in some areas. The air is very fresh and clear, a rare phenomenon in smog-ridden Athens. That was the literally aspect..

The metaphocial aspect refers to economy, of course,  with the Troika pressing for further measures and implementation of the agreements. IMF Poul Thomsen told German DIE WELT on Sunday, that Greece is at cross roads and that Greeks -the government – makes two steps forward, one back. We could have told him that per e-mail years ago, he didn’t need to come here.

Greek FinMin Venizelos promised German EconMin Philipp Roesler that  Greece – the country- will pay back every single Euro it borrows. Greece – the people – wonder where the FinMin will find the money. PM Papandreou told him “We are proud for our achievements”. I hope he didn’t mean ‘proud’ of bringing Education,, Health, Economy and Society back to the misery of 1950/60…

Merkel and Sarkozy meet this afternoon in Berlin to discuss the Euro crisis in general and the Greek debt misery in particular. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble favors a bigger than 21% “haircut”.
