A new trend is up in Greece: haircut! Long-haired Greeks are rushing to hairdressers, short-haired Greeks to the banks. And withdraw their savings… you know… just in case. Government and the media repeatedly assure that ‘bank savings are not in danger’ after a haircut. Which is true. But people prefer to walk on the safe side. You know… just in case…
Pensioners are on a shaking delirium that the haircut might enforce ‘pensions of €100 level’. Government assures that there will be provisions for the insurance funds. However it looks that the ins. funds won’t be exempted form the haircut.
The new government slogan “If we exit the euro, we won’t be able to buy wheat for bread and sugar for coffee”. No government official was able to answer questions like “Why Greece has no sugar and wheat production?” during talk shows on Monday night. State run sugar factories have been closed down by the … government. That’s wrongly understood “state socialism”, I dare say…
The public transport is on strike and as usual traffic jams were horrible this morning in the Greek capital.
Civil servants ‘occupied’ some buildings of the Finance Ministry.
Strikes and lack of funds delayed the issue of tax bills concerning the second installment of the ‘solidarity tax’. Now the Ministry urges taxpayers to go to the banks with the first installment bills and pay their enforced solidarity tribute. However the banks have difficulties to accept the payments as their is no payment code. the Ministry blames the strike for the delay, rumourists claim there is no ink to print the bills.
Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said Monday evening that the government intends to ask 180 votes from the Greek parliament for the ‘haircut’ agreement. Ruling party PASOK has just 153 MPs. As hardly an opposition party will agree, ‘early elections’ seem to be the next film Greeks will have ot watch and actively participate.
European Task Force chief Horst Reichenbach will be on a two-day visit in Athens.
Last night the mountains of garbage bags were picked up by garbage collectors. Finally. I’ll surely won’t miss the smell and the flies.
The seamen strike is over, however as some companies have not paid the workers, some ships and ferries remain docked.
Students and teachers prepare nice surprises for government officials during the “October 28th”-National Day. In Patras and other cities of Peloponnese, parents association asked that no government official will attend the parade. “We want just the Greek flag” they say. In Thessaloniki, teachers will parade wearing black armbands.
The government prepares a new taxation system, the number 3 or 4 within the last 18 months. It will ‘delete’ tax-free exemptions.
After months of struggling to combat tax evasion, the first dodger has been finally arrested. An entrepreneur in Thessaloniki. For having notpaid Value Added Tax worth 400.000 euro.
The government plans to fine consumers with €100, should they have bought something without receipt. Government inabilities will punish the citizens. Then: it is the duty of the state to fulfill its tasks. I wonder what will happen with the army of immigrants selling goods on the streets… hehehe
Athens Stock Exchange started in PLUS. Yesterday, it suffered losses of -5% with banks shares plunging into deep dives.
PS I might go to a hairdresser today. I definitely need a good news, even if it refers to my own head…
