28th October 2011- The Alternative OXI-Day Parade
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Economy, Very Mix
Every year, on October 28th the Greeks celebrate with parades the anniversary of heroic “Oxi”-Day, the day when the then prime minister of Greece said “NO” to Italy’s ultimatum asking the surrender of Greece to the forces of the Axis. That was on October 28th, 1940. Parades are usually performed by school students on October 27th and by the Armed Forces on October 28th in Thessaloniki. Greek politicians, deputies, ministers and local officials stand on a special podest and watch the co However this year, parades will most likely look different due to the strict austerity measures, in the second year of loan agreements between Greece and its lenders. The following brilliant text is not mine. It was posted on newspaper Real news and was written by media critic Ntepy Golema:
Enjoy it!
This year, during the National Day Parade, the speaker will have to alternate his announcment text as follows and for obvious reasons:
At the top of the parade, here march the honoured ‘labour reservists’ of the public sector. The resistance corps against the German occupation, tought fighters who gave up 40% of their monthly salary. Applaud!
Infantries consisting of impoverished pensioners march forward, holding photocopies of the new austerity measures. They cheer the political leadership and throw the photocopies up in the air full of national pride.
Here comes, the pride of the country, the emergency property tax. Thousands of people, the crowds in delirium and collapse, applaud in frenzy.
And yes! Here they come, ladies and gentlemen! The new payroll, pensioners under 55, proud mothers with disabled children, all those freed from their pensions sprinkle with rose petals the Troika-Squad attending the parade.
In front of the stunned spectators, here arrive the supplementary pensions. Crying out loud the audience deified the heroic supplementary pension that defeated the German invasion and held up the national sentiment of the Greeks. Sad, sad, this is the last parade of the supplementary pensions.
And now! Look up in the skies! The fearless F-16s, the horror and the terror of every prospective enemy of the homeland, tearing the clouds. They drop papers with the latest austerity measures of the recently announced austerity measures. The F-16 show that they are pioneers and fully capable to see into the real dangers and take risks.
