Beware! New Fraud Tricks Per SMS!

Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Tech

This seems to be the new fraud trick. They send SMS claiming you have won Millions and Millions in Lottery wins and they try to steal your personal data. A practice similar to the Nigeria spams through e-mails. Now the Department of Cyber Crime Unit of the Greek Police has issued a warning and urges mobile users not to open the fraud SMS.

The fraud SMS could look like this:

“YOUR MOBILE NUMBER HAS WON 2,000,000.00 POUNDS IN THE BLACKBERRY UK MOBILE PROMO, FOR CLAIMS SEND EMAIL YOUR NAME, MOBILE NO & COUNTRY TO blackberryyou@europe.com”

The sms is sent by an unknown number from abroad and the message is in English.

Greek police urges mobile users not to open the sms and by no means to answer it. Then fraudsters’ aim is to collect of personal data from the sms receiver.

If receive such an sms you can forward it to the e-mail of Cyber Crime Unit of the Greek police: ccu@cybercrimeunit.gr or call the 24/7 telephone line <11012

I assume,  the fraudsters do not send their sms only to Greeks, so beware not matter where you are located in the world.

PS I occasionally receive sms in English mostly of commercial content. Odd enough the sender has the name of some friends of mine! Should I report them?
