Wha’ts Up in Greece on Dec 16?

“Derailment” is up in Greece, derailment in government targets, in measures and ,of course, in our pockets. The Troika is leaving and gives the Greek government a one-month deadline to fix the issues of “labour reserve’, of labour relations in the public sector, of the state-run enterprises (DEKO), of privatizations, of insurance system and investments. Given the upcoming Christmas holidays, I see a similar development as last summer after the July 21st agreement: holidays and zero result. However, the seventh aid tranche will be due in February 2012, therefore, some Greek politician might work indeed. Times have changes, guys, you need to work even on holidays!
The Troika is leaving without having a third meeting with FinMin Evangelos Venizelos, and will come back after 15. January 2012.
The measure of ‘labour reserve’ has heroically fallen into the grave-yard of civil servants building the voters’ basis. From the target of 10 thousand people to have gone into labour reserve in 2011, only 2,000 went home with 60% of their former income. The measure is out, lay-offs in the public sector is inevitable. Thousands of civil servants will be without job from one day to the next.
The Finance Ministry seeks to employ 2,235 controllers to combat tax evasion. The Tax-Kamikazes will investigate income sources, V.A.T. calculations, audit large enterprises and wealthy taxpayers [probably those who do not pay their taxes lol]. 75% of the controllers will come from internal transfers of the public sector.
Angry citizens overrun the telephone centre of the Greek Parliament after hearing that the 15th and 16th salary of Parliament administrative staff have been cancelled. OPS! Greeks got angry hearing that Parliament staff will receive instead so-called “productivity bonus”. Parliament staff used to receive a tax-free 15/16th salary every year. Now their wages will be integrated in the new common payroll for public sector servants and will be decreased. However the productivity bonus will grant them 100 euro per month. No wonder Greeks got really angry about the preferential treatment of Parliament staff, the moment everyone suffers incredible income decreases.
Coalition-government partner, conservative Nea Dimokratia opposes any extension of the Papademos’ government. “This government is temporary, transitional and has a horizon of two months” said ND leader Antonis Samaras.
Far-right gov’ partner LAOS proposed a government reshuffle and extension. socialist PASOK has other problems: Who will lead the party to the next elections. Ex-PM George Papandreou or somebody else? There are rumors that there will be internal party elections for a new leader in January 2012.
The Ministry for Citizens’ Protection will finally pay ‘transportation expenses’ to coastal guards. Retroactive from 2005 until the 8th month of 2011! Six million euro. I assure, without interest rates.
Robberies have gotten out of any control. Within 12 hours, there were 9 incidents in suburbs of Athens, where robbers hit pedestrians, entered private homes, stole jewelry from jewelry shops and targeted several gasoline stations.
National Meteorologic Authority warns of extreme weather conditions with sweeping storms and heavy snowfall and strong winds of even 9 Beaufort in the open sea. Temperatures drop is on the way, even thought at the moment Athens enjoys a wonderful sunny day and 22 degrees Celsius. The extreme weather front will hit the country tomorrow Saturday.
