Christmas 2011: The Weather in Greece
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in weather
Cold, snow and rain will be present in Greece on December 24-26th 2011, making the dream of “White Christmas” come true. Northern Greece will freeze with temperatures of even -9 degrees Celsius and frost that will turn roads into sliding mirrors. Snow will fall even in Attica, in the northern suburb of Athens while the south suburbs will have the pleasure of snow-rain only. Temperatures in Athens will be 6 to 10° C on Saturday, and 3 to 8°C on Sunday and Monday. In the Aegean Sea winds will blow up to 8 Beaufort.
Snow is expected to fall in Crete too.
The weather is expected to become better on Tuesday but will turn icy cold with snow fall on New Year’s Eve again.
Egnatia highway that connects east and western borders of Greece is finally free for traffic after two days.
Ferries and ships operate as usual but you’d better check with local agents and port authorities for possible changes.
Don’t be a fool! Put chains on your car tires, do not drink before driving and go buy wood for the fire place.

It’s indeed cold outside tonight here in Athens. No not in the north but in Aghia Paraskevi. Drove up today. I fly out of the country tomorrow.
Today I saw a lot of snow around me. Pity that the clouds closed in before I reached Athens. Although I managed to sneak a peak of Parnitha in the snow.
Strange Christmas Eve. It was not busy on the roads. And here, around my hotel, people were until late doing shopping. I looked in their baskets. And it was just what you would expect on a normal day. Nothing more. Nothing special. I have seen total different things in the past… Let’s hope people find a way to enjoy these days without the expensive stuff. And just enjoy each others company.
exactly as you describe it: more window shopping, less real shopping this year. Don’t forget to have a coffee with KTG on your way back. In case you come back…
‘They’ don’t get rid of me that easy. To quote Schwarzenegger: “I’ll be back!” (on Januari 3).
I have been talking to a lot of people on my trip. And everywhere you hear the same: Crisis, crisis! And most think they won’t have jobs in the New Year. A shop assistant on the airport almost shouted that when I wished her a better year than 2011 was. That was after a short exchange of ‘crisis-talk’. The nightporter in the hotel, thought I had been shooting on Syntagma. When I told him I shoot most of the times trees he laughed and then told me some details about his personal live that make you shiver.
Just two examples. Just two lives. KTG has told these stories too. Keep telling them, because these are the stories nobody outside Greece hears. But need to. Just one day into my trip abroad and that is so clear. Everybody is totally pre-occupied with their own insecurities about 2012. And Greece is indeed in the front of their mind, but without these detailed knowledge. No, I haven’t met people yet that are blaming Greeks as a people, but it is so difficult to relate to them that Greece has not just one problem, but all the problems of the EU-countries put together.
Next four days I will be out and about: working. And I have to say that it is a wonderful feeling to be able to just concentrate on that and just don’t feel for a couple of days the crisis. Here people had their shopping baskets full with stuff for Christmas. And I mean FULL.
But, boy oh boy, what am I missing Greece already!!!! *sigh* (and I am really not joking!!!)
antonis i think its true what the poet said “wherever i go greece hurts me”, wether the place is hell to live in or the conditions bad, as soon as we are out of the country all we want is to go back. does that make us masochists? but i have lost all hope that things will improve. with the way things are run the only way we see improvement is when we reach rock bottom and there is no further down to go. then we can only move upwards. enjoy the holidays as mich as you can.
Vassilis, you are so right with this quote. It really hurts. No, we are not masochists… we are simply in love. Fools in love…
And I do not know also how to break this cycle of despair and have lost hope…
Thanks for the wishes. Holidays. But it is also work. Yes, works is there… outside of Greece. And I wish us all all the best for 2012. Be it in or outside of Greece. Xronia polla.
