Dec 24: Christmas Carols in Greece (video)

They ring the door bell as early as 8 o’clock in the morning. Some children even leave their home and go out to sing the Christmas Carols the moment the first sun light rises on the horizon. Greece’s children faithfully follow the tradition to sing the Carols on the Christmas Eve. In small groups and holding  iron triangles the children go from house to house and ask “Shall we say them?” If they knock your door, don’t be a Scrooge. Say “Yes”, let them sing for good luck and give them some money. Many children”s parents won’t be able to give them any Christmas gifts…. So the money from the “calanda” will make their dreams come true!

Younger children do not know the whole text, but it doesn’t matter :)

Children also sing Carols on New Year’s Eve and some even on Epiphany Eve (January 5) although this customs slowly dies.

PS This morning they rang my bell at 8 am. I jumped from the bed and rushed to the door. I asked “Who is?” and the voices answered “Shall we say them?” I said YES and pushed the button to open the entrance door. However they didn’t come up. Was I too sleepy and didn’t make myself clear? It is very odd that no other children came for the Carols so far (10.30 am). Are children afraid that the Finance Ministry will ask taxes from their Christmas Carols revenues?
