Extreme Weather Conditions Hit Greece – Video: Waves Sweep Cars

Greece is trapped in the grip of extreme weather conditions with strong winds reaching even 10 Beaufort, rain, snow and low temperatures and big waves sweeping everything on their way on shore. Rivers flooded due to continuous rainfalls and winds swept away snow masses with the effect that many roads were closed to traffic in many areas of Northern Greece. Frost turned roads into ice-skating adventures for passenger cars and trucks.

Mostly hit by the bad weather front are Central and Northern Greece and thus from East to the West. Here is a detailed guide about what roads have been closed to traffic, unfortunately in Greek only.

The strong winds blowing with intensity of 9 Beaufort hit a small fishing port at Korfo Korinthias, Peloponnese, causing some 50 boats to overturn and sink. There have been some damages in the village too, Greek media report.

In Amaliada uprooted dozens of trees causing severe damages in the camping of Kouroutas and the surrounding area. Electricity posts have been damages, cars hit by fallen trees.

Patras: Sea on shore

On the mountain of  Belles in the Serres prefecture,  a climber, 36, lost his life. Together with his friend they were at 1,700 m height, when they lost their way.

On Saturday huge waves swept 37 private cars parked at the port of the island of Tinos, Cyclades.

 News portal Zougla.gr reports that the port of Tinos mutated into a Greek “Venice” and that the state mechanism has been unable to deal with the emergency situation.

On Sunday, winds have lost their power, but in the Prefecture of Florina some villages are without electricity.
