Solidarity Action Goes Global: We Are All Greeks Now
Posted by keeptalkinggreece in Society
From New York to Paris and from Dusseldorf ro Madrid people are gathering at main squares and outside Greek diplomatic representations to express their solidarity with the Greek people. With the common slogan “We Are All Greeks”. Greeks suffering from the dramatic economic situations, from the harsh austerity measures. With every measure that passes through the Greek parliament, more and more people outside Greece realize the brutality of austerity and the exaggeration in Greece’s lenders’ demands. An unprecedented experiment carried out on the shoulders of the Greeks.
The friends of the Greeks say that Greece is used as a laboratory for austerity measures that are social unjust and undemocratic.
“The Greek people need international solidarity, international support. Therefore we respond to their call. We are all Greeks now” organizers of the global solidarity action said in several statements posted across the internet and social media.
In Facebook a page dedicated to “We are all Greeks” has been set up and spread like a wildfire.
Solidarity actions start today Saturday, after 2 pm (Greek time). In Paris at 3pm local time and more than 17 trade unions have announced their participation.
Other protests will take place in Grenoble, Lyon, Marseilles, Nantes, Nice, Toulouse. At 6 pm in Barcelona Solidarity actions take place also in Germany, Ireland, Portugal, The Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Italy, Sweden.

John Holloway in The Guardian said today:
“We are all Greeks. We are all subjects whose subjectivity is simply being flattened by the steamroller of a history determined by the movement of the money markets. Or so it seems and so they would have it. Millions of Italians protested over and over again against Silvio Berlusconi but it was the money markets that brought him down. The same in Greece: demonstration after demonstration against George Papandreou, but in the end it was the money markets that dismissed him. In both cases, loyal and proven servants of money were appointed to take the place of the fallen politicians, without even a pretence of popular consultation. This is not even history made by the rich and powerful, though certainly they profit from it: it is history made by a dynamic that nobody controls, a dynamic that is destroying the world, if we let it.” (London Daily News)

Galdisent a letter to the President of the European Commission Jose Barrosso, the Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and the Greek Prime Minister Lucas Papademos announcing his decision. Mosciatello said it is an symbolic act to show solidarity with the Greeks.
In Athens, high-school students and youth groups have announced to start a protest at 5 pm outside the Greek parliament at Syntagma Square.

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out – because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out – because I was not a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out – because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me -
and by then there was no one left to speak out for me.
Here’s a compact analysis of the “comrade of the bosses” (Gerhard Schroeder, although this kind of politics was originally invented by Bill Clinton…) “Agenda 2010″, “Hartz IV”, Minijobs, etc and how it’s used as blueprint by the Troika aso, it might exist in other languages too: http://www.taz.de/Aus-Le-Monde-diplomatique/!87370/
Another Facebook Group dedicated to standing by the Greeks with a collection of articles, videos and discussions between all Europeans!
There is no protests where I am so: Είμαι μαζί σας όλο το δρόμο, καλή τύχη από το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο!
Dear citizens of Greece, Papagoldman is right. You and your countrymen very well may face “uncontrolled economic chaos and social explosion.” should your lawmakers choose to vote no to the bill before them. But the alternative, a vote to accept the draconian austerity package, will result in indentured servitude for you, your children and your childrens’ children. Don’t sucumbe to the doctrine of fear that your so called leaders espouse. True citizens of the world see this for what it really is , economic annexation. Although you are the first to feel this pressure, you are most certainly not the last. We will soon be forced to join your battle and we will gladly strorm the streets. Don’t sucumbe to the doctrine of fear lest your island of Euboea becomes Blankfienville, Rhodes becomes Desmarais or Naxos becomes Merkelonia. Fight economic annexation and we will be right with you fighting these bastards until the end.
We should all be learning from what is currently taking place in Europe. Rather than denigrating the Greeks we should be focused on what can be done to mitigate the unfortunate fate that awaits nearly all of what we affectionately call the “developed” world. Greece is just a preview of the coming disaster. We all have mountains of debt and aging populations with the associated impossible levels of unfunded liabilities. The worldwide deleveraging that must occur is going to be painful no matter what course of action is pursued. Some choices are more prudent than others but those are also the ones most likely to be avoided by the self absorbed, intellectually challenged, ethically bankrupt hoard that is the political class. Keep your eye on Greece. They are the window to our future.
The Greeks should abandon the Euro, default on all their debts, regain their sovereignty and adopt their own currency. Money is the simplest form of government and when you lend money to another country the country making the loan is taking over the borrower’s government as assuredly as if they had invaded them militarily.
If this fact was understood by economist and politicians alike it would be recognized as treason to finance debt by borrowing from another country. You can’t separate a country from its currency.

YES WE ARE ALL GREEKS NOW, AND YES SORRY FOR OUR GOVERN-MENT (this last word meaning LIE)-From France
Let’s be honest.
A few people simply can’t represent a trend. The Greeks themselves don’t even know what to do.
The political system of Greece is not a free-thinking democracy but it is mainly a socio-communistic state regulated democracy.
For example, the people who vote in political elections and re-elect the same political parties over and over again composed mainly by 1 million public servants and the 1,2-1,5 million people who work in closed services in private sector highly regulated by the state. Now by taking under concern also the families of these highly privileged working classes, the number of voters can easily reach 4-5 million people out of 10 million people of the total population of Greece. Excluding, the wealthy Greek classes (privileged in monopolistic markets), the older people (due to health issues they cannot vote) and young generations (under aged to vote).
In Greece there are only approximately 2-3 million people, Greeks and foreigners, who basically have no rights and they straggle to make a living in private sector and these people must also produce enough wealth in order to compensate the economic losses from the public sector and the highly regulated private sector.
Obviously this is not viable and for this reason Greece is in dept of 150% in relation to it’s GDP(Gross Domestic Product) and this dept is not by taking under concern the real Greek GDP, which can make the dept more than 250%. In addition the 200 billion euros dept of the Greek central bank and the private-public companies (electricity, transportations etc.) launch the dept in an outrageous number more than 350% in relation to Greek GDP.
Greece historically can be analyzed as another political example that when governments have the tendency of not managing the economy but ruling the economy, in the name of ‘‘common good’’ and other highly manipulative socio-communistic ideas made for the masses, the form of government from democratic becomes dictatorial.
Too little, but not too late. The media in Germany did not report so far about the demonstrations in Berlin and Hamburg. More publicity is needed and not just a few guys from facebook. But that’s the right way to bring the protest back to europe. It is time for the rest of europe to stand up and to tell them, that we prefer free people, not free markets. Democracy, not austerity! This is not our europe, it’s time to get it back. Let’s go on!

You people [Greeks] need to make a decision:
1. Default and watch what happens.
2. Migrate. The Irish have been doing this in droves and I do not understand why you do not.
hahaha , a new dilemma: Default or Migrate. So you mean, countries should be abandoned?
A dilemma indeed.
If there isn’t a default now the EU will heap austerity upon austerity and the country will be stripped of its assets, its pride and its democracy. The Greek economy is in a downward spiral and migration will be the only way today’s and tomorrow’s generations will be able to work and support their families.
A default now will allow the economy to eventually grow and return some form of democracy to the Greek people. Hundreds of countries have defaulted in the past and have recovered. The ‘Armageddon’ propaganda is just that – propaganda.
Better invade like the Irish who call Boston an Irish town and haven’t allowed American Indians to come into town until 2004: 400 Years…? Do these proud Irish have an own language?
807 thousand Greeks died during WWII
Germany owes 182 billion euros (amount is without interest) to the Greeks for war damages still.
Today Ch. Merkel said that that we Greeks should: “Stop being so attached to your country”. The woman should be locked up in an instutution for the criminally insane! There is no cure for her!
I have been trying to find this interview of Merkel. Do you have any link?
Xenia, unfortuantely although I understand your sentiment, there is not legal way to prove this. When the US Marshall Plan provided money to Greece, and other countries, one of the stipulations was that Germany would be free from any future reparations.
Also, I think it’s nice that Greek-somethings around the globe, as well as some of the professional activists are supporting Greece, as we definitely need it. But the reality is that the regular guy in all those countries thinks Greece and Greeks are Apateonas (Fraudsters). Just check the daily letters to the editor in the Kathimerini English edition online to see letter after letter angrily blaming Greeks and Greece for their own problems.
So, what can we do? One suggestion is to be nice to the tourists who visit Greece so they can go back to the hive and tell others about how nice the Greeks are instead of the lazy, crafty, rip you off idea they have about us.
Just the other day I started getting angry at some jerk at a kiosk for being rude to some elderly British tourists because they were too slow, and I told him, we need these tourists, shut your mouth and smile, and all he could do was be a Katsufide (Frowny man).
Forgot to mention also that because the Greek schools rarely mention the Marshall plan and it’s postive impact on Greece, we see many Greek people these days calling for War Reparations from Germany. I think it could be beneficial to revisit post WWII history in Greek schools and maybe it would lessen the misdirected anger at the German public.
