Costa Coffee to Close its Shops in Greece

Costa Coffee, the well-known British company puts the padlock to its ten coffee shops in Greece. According to economic news portal Capital.gr, the Greek representative ”The Greek Coffee Company SA” will close its shops in several suburbs of the Athens including those in downtown.
Company representatives confirmed to Capital.gr that the project was not sustainable anymore despite efforts to continue the operation. The Costa Coffee shops started to operate in Greece since. 2007.
PS It looks that Costa Coffee did not drop its prices for coffee lovers suffering under the harsh economic crisis. I read of prices of 3.50 euro for a freddo espresso to go. When meanwhile the Greek competition sells all kinds of coffee to go for one euro. I wonder if Starbucks made some price decreases. It’s austerity time, guys!

I guess more business for StarMitsos now…
Costa Coffee comes with another explenation:
Time for an inquiry by de SDOE?
why don’t they give names then? by the way does anyone know who is the owner of the Greek branch?
That’s what makes me so mad too. Everybody talks about these things and no one never EVER give names. That probably has to do with the fact that if someone gives names he will be prosecuted or put through the courts by the big ‘vested interests’ in Greece.
“Greek Coffee Company SA, owned by Aris Vovos, which represents the British chain in Greece,…” according to http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite2_7_20/11/2012_470902
hehe (for 2. part) I think he is in fincancial troubles, not?
if one gives names his enemies will give his name too.
but such tax allegations are rather cheap in this contect.
Oh yes, he probably is. Although it depends of course if he is a member of one of the Big Families in Greece. Then his losses will be just a tax write off that will make money.
And yes, he hang if he would kiss and tell. But somehow I do believe that there is some truth in his assertion.
Using perfectly legal, but highly immoral tax avoidance schemes, here in the UK Starbucks has paid no UK corporation tax in the last three years, despite reporting sales of £1.2bn.
Yep. Something called Double Irish Dutch Sandwich. Apple, Google and Amazon are just a couple of big corporations that are using that kind of routes too. http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/nov/12/amazon-google-starbucks-diverting-uk-profits
Indeed perfectly legal. And only possible because every country is adamant about it’s wish to not integrate and streamline their tax-laws with each other, because they all think they can have one up on the expense of an other country.
I think people who drinks lot os expensive coffee should try an experiment in Greece and elsewhere, to give up a few cups of expensive coffee a month and donate it to a fund maybe called “The coffee drinkers’ charity fund” or anything people with better imaginations than me can think of. It could be used to run charities for a few less cups a month would have no major impact on those who drink lots of expensive coffee while the collective money from these individuals would have a big impact on those getting the charity. In Greece it could be used to run anti-suicide programs for one thing.
excellent idea!
It exists. http://www.people-in-need.com. Have alook and stop drinking all that coffee
Am I the only person who has NEVER bought a coffee anywhere??? I have a coffee in the morning before work and again in the afternoon – I can’t imagine shelling out money to buy coffees!!! Now … ouzo is worth paying for!
I would disagree here: nothing like a good cappucino while going around to fix things.
