I am afraid you will not be able to go shopping next Sunday, July 13th 2014, as retail workers will launch a 24-hour strike. Retail workers will strike in order to protest the opening of shops on 52 Sundays per year in 10 selective cities. Strong reactions come also from small and medium shop owners who say that they cannot afford open on Sunday as well and come up for extra salaries and cost.
The measure has been decided upon by the government without the consent of the institution sectors involved. But the government has to fulfill the Troika dictates in the name of “competitiveness”.
Sunday, July the 13th, was supposed to be the first Sunday for the imposition of the measure.
PS I’ll jump if I see Greeks shopping on a Sunday between 2-4 pm at 36 degrees Celsius in the streets surrounded by boiling-hot cement. Ops! My mistake! The measure is for the benefits of the Greek economy and the tourists visiting these ten selective cities.
