Greek Cyber-Crime dept prevented 19 suicides in Jan, Feb 2011

The Cyber or Electronic  Crime Department of  Greek police in Attica prefecture succeeded in preventing 19 suicides attempts that occurred in January and February, the specialized police unit announced. According to the statement the suicide intentions were indicated through the internet, in social media pages or chat rooms and forums.
 
The statement said further, that the attempts were prohibited when other internet users informed the Electronic Crime Dept.

According to police, 17 of the those intended to committ suicide are Greeks and two foreigners; among them are 5 Greek minors and one foreign minor. Their ages are between 13 and 51 years old. All had claimed personal reasons.

Two of them were saved at the last minute and were hospitalized so their problems will be addressed.

The statement noted that from 2006 up to date, the E-Crime Dept has prevented the suicide of 160 people who had expressed their intention to put an end to their lives on internet.

Taking into consideration also the rapid reaction of the Cyber Crime Dept in the context of animal abuse cases posted on websites , I must say : Congrats, guys!
