Gaddafi’s Envoy meets Greek PM in Athens

Libya’s deputy foreign minister Adbelati Obeidi  met Greece’s prime minister in Athens where he delivered a message from Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, officials said. The meeting has been concluded and Greek Foreign Minister is due to make statemnts on the issue, portal news247 reported.

Abdelati Obeidi’s trip came after Greek PM George Papandreou spoke to his Libyan counterpart Al-Baghdadi Ali Al-Mahmudi on Saturday about developments on the crisis.

Mr Papandreou has also held talks with Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of Qatar and Turkey in the last two days.

Mr Obeidi had crossed from Libya into neighbouring Tunisia and from there flew to Athens, a source said.

Sky News reported earlier:

His exodus had sparked rumours he was following in the footsteps of Gaddafi’s former foreign minister Musa Kusa who fled to London via Tunisia a few days ago.

It was not clear what Col Gaddafi’s message said – but the development has raised hopes of a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

Greek journalist Anthee Carassava told Sky News: “The purpose, as we were told, of this surprise mission is to effectively deliver a personal message from Colonel Gaddafi.”

She added that government officials remained tight-lipped as to what the message may include but said an exit strategy for Col Gaddafi had not been raised.
